Die Haarteppichknüpfer von Andreas Eschbach (2021)

Ich habe das Buch wirklich genossen. Die Art und Weise, wie die Welt aufgebaut ist, fand ich spannend und einzigartig. Die zentralen Themen – Macht, Autorität und die Grenzen persönlicher Einflussnahme – sind beeindruckend und regen zum Nachdenken an. Alle Charaktere sind sorgfältig ausgearbeitet und ziehen einen sofort in ihren Bann. Jede ihrer Geschichten trägt auf schlüssige Weise zum Gesamtbild bei. Das Science-Fiction-Setting sorgt für eine faszinierende Atmosphäre voller Staunen, die den Hintergrund lebendig macht, ohne jedoch für die eigentliche Handlung entscheidend zu sein. Insgesamt vergebe ich 4 / 5 Sternen.

Klara and the Sun Kazuo Ishiguro (2021)

I finally read an Ishiguro book that I enjoyed!  The author's Nobel Prize winning writing in my favorite genre of science fiction, coupled with great psychological, sociological, and metaphysical explorations is great. 4/5 Stars.

Attack Surface by Corey Doctorow (2020)

Fun thriller with odd twists and turns but I found the characters and events contrived and unrealistic. I do not recommend this one.  Doctorow has written better books in the same genre. 2/5 Stars.

Feersum Endjinn by Iain M. Banks (1994)

I did not enjoy this book as much as all of the other Ian Banks books I have read.  The magic system and mystical fearsome engine are quite terrible and the odd interactions of birds is also off-putting (for me). 2/5 Stars.

L'Île mystérieuse (1875)

I loved this book! The French is at a 3rd or 4th grade level and easy to read. The themes are reminiscent of Alex de Tocqueville's De la démocratie en Amérique  in its celebration of the frontier spirit, American ingenuity, the triumph of hard work, grit, and technology over nature, and enlightenment ideals. The characters are well-developed archetypes and colorful in Verne's unique style.  The story is unpredictable with a wonderful mystery and slow reveal. I think this one is my favorite Jules Verne book now. 5/5 Stars. (I started writing this review in French but realized I could not express myself well.)

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (1875 - 1878)

Another book from one of my kids' bookshelves that I added to my backlog because I had never read any major Russian literature and was curious.  My preconception of the story was that the main character was a charismatic, beautiful, good-hearted person (Anna) who was ostracized and destroyed by the evil oligarchical 19th century Russian society.  And I thought that the book covered  themes of hypocrisy, jealousy, faith, fidelity, family, marriage, society, progress, carnal desire and passion, along with the agrarian connection to land in contrast to the lifestyles of the elites in the city.  After riding along the 1,000-page slow, rambling roller coaster, I now think the story is almost completely psychological. The main characters experience acute schizophrenic episodes, triggered by the "trauma" of silly expressions and "feelings" or thoughts they project onto other people.  The details of farming, the social norms, and some of the philosophy is mildly interesting but not worth the slog. 3/5 Stars. I don't recommend this one.

A short stay in hell by Steven L. Peck (2012)

My youngest daughter told me to read this one, so I dropped what I was reading and read it in two days (it's short).  I claim to understand Georg Cantor's infinite orders of infinity and I also claim to understand the set theoretical difference between finite and infinite. I normally don't consider subjectively what it is like to live for a googolplex of years, before going on to a different existence for eternity.  This novella goes into enormous detail of one such experience.  I was obsessed with the story's concepts and even dreamed about the events in the story for a few days after reading it. The writing is not particularly good, but the ideas are well presented. 5/5 Stars.

Hurrah wir leben noch von Johannes Mario Simmel (1978)

Ich mag Simmel-Bücher und habe mich gefreut, in der größten Buchhandlung der Welt in Portland, Oregon, ein Buch von Simmel zu entdecken, das ich noch nicht gelesen hatte. Simmels Geschichten sind sinnliche Dramen über Liebe, Sex, Neid, Essen und Ficken, Rastlosigkeit und Verrat, politische Korruption und den Zynismus der Mächtigen. Die Geschichten enthalten "James Bond"-Elemente, die geschmackvoll präsentiert und immer unterhaltsam sind. 4/5 Sterne.

Clever, well-crafted, immersive, and fun.  I did not like the end of the story-in-the-story. 4/5 Stars.

Homo Faber von Max Frisch (1957)

Ich habe diese Geschichte wirklich genossen. Es ist unvorhersehbar, subtil und gut gemacht. Das philosophische Thema der anti-humanistischen amoralischen Wissenschaft und Technologie im Vergleich zu Mythen, Kunst und Transzendentalismus ist großartig. 5/5 Sterne

Ich habe dieses Buch langsam gelesen, weil mir die Prosa und der Stil gefallen haben. Die bürgerlichen und sozialen Interaktionen sind schrecklich, frustrierend und erschreckend. Die Hauptfigur K hat gesunden Menschenverstand und stellt unschuldige, vernünftige Fragen. Der Dialog und die detaillierte Darstellung der Bewegungen, Ereignisse und Schauplätze sind fantastisch. Die Geschichte ist natürlich sehr deprimierend. 4/5 Sterne.

Die Verwandlung von Franz Kafka (1912)

Diese Geschichte ist schrecklich. Ich verstehe nicht, warum Kafka so viel Aufmerksamkeit erhält. 1/5 Sterne.

Iphigenia auf Taurus by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1787)

Die Sprache des Stücks ist wunderschön. Die Geschichte hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Ereignisse wurden geschaffen, um Tragödien auszulösen, aber eine klare Kommunikation rettete alle und führte zu einem glücklichen Ende. 4/5 Sterne.

Neu Jahr von Juli Zeh (2018)

Ich war begeistert, als die lange Warteliste für diese Bibliotheks-Reservierung es mir endlich ermöglichte, dieses Buch auszuleihen. Der psychologische Einblick meines Lieblingsautors in Kindheitstraumata, posttraumatische Belastungsstörungen und Angstanfälle mit erschreckend realistischer paroxysmaler Tachykardie ist sehr packend und eindringlich. Die Textur und Tiefe der Schauplätze und Charaktere sowie die präzise Sprache sind wunderbar. Diese Geschichte gehört nicht zu meinen Lieblingsgeschichten von Juli Zeh. Das Buch ist jedoch großartig. Daher habe ich auf 5/5 Sterne aufgerundet.

Über Menschen von Juli Zeh (2021)

Humorvoll und wunderbarer Roman über Menschen verschiedenen Charakters. Die Hauptfiguren sind teils sozial schwierig, aber dennoch liebenswert. Die Geschichte handelt von ihre Lebensumstände und Beziehungen zueinander. Es geht um kulturelle und mentale Barrieren, um menschlichen, toleranten und angstfreien Umgang mit gegensätzlichen politischen Einstellungen in der Familie und in der Nachbarschaft. 5/5 Sterne.

Nullzeit von Juli Zeh (2012)

Schauplatz dieses fantastischen Psychothrillers ist eine deutsche Tauchschule auf Lanzarote (Kanarische Inseln). Der Besitzer der Schule, Sven, lernt ein soziopathisches, gewalttätiges deutsches Paar aus Berlin kennen. Sven durchlebt eine Reihe lebensbedrohlicher, spannender und melodramatischer Selbstfindungs-Abenteuer. Die Schönheit und Struktur des Sporttauchens ist faszinierend und fesselnd. Die Charaktere erwachen durch ihre komplexen Persönlichkeiten, ihr Aussehen, ihre Haltung, ihre Kleidung und ihre Dialoge zum Leben. 5/5 Sterne. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, das nächste Buch von Juli Zeh zu lesen.

Red Ice by William C Dietz (2018)

Some work colleagues recommended this series and lent me the first one; it's ok, but not great.  And recent events make the entire plot line ridiculous. 3/5 Stars.
